Gucci "Blackface" Balaclava Controversy

February is a black history month in Western. This month is used to express respect for the history of African Americans and to praise the black people for their outstanding contributions to American culture, politics, and life. We know that many brands make various attempts to attract attention when producing new products. This is also the characteristic of lots of fashion brands. This time, the luxury brand Gucci fell into the "Blackface" Balaclava Controversy because of a black balaclava designed by Gucci.

The balaclava features a long neck which covers the mouth, as well as a bright red hole for one's lips. When Twitter users noticed the design appeared similar to traditional blackface design in February of 2019, it caused outrage en masse.

Gucci released an apology stating they were committed to diversity and removed the item from its online shop (shown below). The controversy made national news, and it was covered by New York Times,Vox and NPR. Many publications made connections to the ongoing Ralph Northram blackface controversy concerning photos of the governor of Virginia in blackface.
